When Catholic settlers first arrived in the Village of Ellsworth, the closest church, Clayfield Parish, was five miles outside of town. In the summer of 1897, a committee was selected to look into building a church within the Village. The members were Micheal Fitzgerald, Francis B. Saxton, Emil W. Richter, Charles Riley, and Micheal P. Harris. In 1898, the church was approved and built at the corner of Piety and Woodworth Streets. With a crowd marveling over the magnificent edifice, a dedication for St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church was held on May 26, 1898.
