Older persons may recall that the anointing of the sick used to be called Extreme Unction and was given only once close to a person’s death. This is no longer the case. When Vatican II took a fresh look at the sacraments, the anointing of the sick was changed to reflect its use in the early Church. From the Letter of St. James we read: “Are there sick among you? Let them send for the priests of the church who will anoint the sick person with oil.” Blessed oil is used to symbolize the blessing of the person and the calling forth of the Holy Spirit.
Who should receive the anointing of the sick?
Anyone with a serious illness or injury can be anointed. This can also include chronic illnesses such as depression and anxiety.
Can it be repeated?
Yes, a person can receive this sacrament multiple times. It is appropriate to anoint someone if a serious condition worsens or, from time to time, to anoint the elderly who are frail.
What about receiving the sacrament before surgery?
This is a good time to make use of the sacrament if the operation is serious or your health is frail. You can receive this sacrament several days before the scheduled surgery. Anointing after a weekday or weekend Mass before surgery is not uncommon.
